Si el lapicero tiene una dureza B dibuja en un tono negro intenso y con un trazo relativamente ancho porque la mina es más blanda. Estos lápices son adecuados para dibujar a mano alzada, por ejemplo.
Los lápices HB tienen una mina más dura. Esto significa que el lápiz dibuja líneas más finas, por lo que es especialmente idóneo para el dibujo a mano alzada.
