LAMY nibs: to enhance your handwriting

Handwriting is as unique as a fingerprint. It is an expression of personality, a tool for creativity and something special in an increasingly digital world. But what really defines the writing experience with a high-quality fountain pen?

It is the precision with which the ink meets the paper. At LAMY, we know that the heart of every writing instrument is the nib. In our range of LAMY nib grades, you’ll find the perfect selection to personalise, perfect or renew your writing experience.

Whether you are left-handed, prefer a particularly fine line, or wish to add artistic touches with a broad calligraphy nib: the right nib for your fountain pen determines how fluidly and expressively you can put your thoughts down on paper.

Why choosing the right LAMY fountain pen nib is crucial

A LAMY fountain pen is a companion for life. LAMY’s modular system of replacement parts and accessories allows you to adapt it to your needs time and time again.

LAMY nibs are renowned for their durability and the variety of nib widths available, including special nibs with bevelled tips and premium gold nibs with elegant finishes.

By changing the LAMY fountain pen nib, you can use your pen in different ways and give your handwriting a distinct character.

The variety of LAMY nib grades

When choosing the right nib for your LAMY fountain pen, it depends on your hand position, the pressure you apply and, of course, your own personal style.

LAMY offers a wide range of nib widths and materials, e.g.:

  1. The beginner’s nib grade (A): Ideal for those new to writing. The rounded shape compensates for an untrained hand (even under pressure) and prevents scratching on the paper. The nib is very stable.

  2. Fine and extra-fine nibs (F/EF): Perfect for people with a fine, delicate handwriting or for precise sketches.

  3. Medium-width nibs (M): The all-rounder among nibs. It suits almost any handwriting style and offers a rich ink flow.

  4. Broad nibs (B) & (BB): For distinctive signatures and expressive lines.

  5. Left-handed nibs (LH): Specially designed to allow left-handers to write effortlessly without scratching and without the ink smudging. To this end, this nib has a special, bevelled cut.

  6. Bevelled calligraphy nibs (OM, OB, OBB): For the art of beautiful writing in line widths of 1.1 mm, 1.5 mm and 1.9 mm.

Changing the nib on a LAMY fountain pen: simple and practical

One of the greatest advantages of the LAMY brand is its user-friendliness and well-thought-out functionality. If you have bought a new nib for your LAMY fountain pen, you don’t need to be an expert to fit it.

Step-by-step guide

To change the LAMY fountain pen nib, all you need is a small coin (or simply use the cap of your fountain pen).

  1. Carefully press the coin or the edge of the cap with one hand right at the front of the nib and position it on a table.

  2. Then pull the fountain pen backwards with gentle, straight pressure so that the old nib remains on the table.

  3. Simply slide the new LAMY nib grade into the guide rails until it clicks into place.

  4. Your fountain pen is now ready to use again: with a completely new writing experience.

The question of materials for nibs

Our range includes a variety of materials that significantly influence writing performance. The classic nib for LAMY fountain pens is made from high-quality stainless steel. The Z52 nib is also PVD-coated. We also offer black stainless steel nibs in our range (such as the Z 50 model).

These nibs are robust, retain their shape for a long time and produce a clear, defined line on the paper.

For those who appreciate a touch of luxury, we also offer gold nibs. These are further enhanced with an additional finish (the LAMY Z 55 nib is partially rhodium-plated and the Z 58 nib is partially palladium-plated).

A 14-carat gold nib (in gold or rose gold) adapts even better to the user’s individual writing pressure thanks to its softness. The result is an incomparably smooth glide that relieves strain on the wrist. Furthermore, gold is more corrosion-resistant than steel, making the nib even more durable.

Whichever material you choose, every LAMY fountain pen nib is manufactured by us under the strictest quality controls.

The importance of ergonomics in LAMY fountain pen nibs

For us, design is never an end in itself. Form follows function. This also applies to LAMY nibs.

A good fountain pen nib should not only look elegant, but also perform well. If you write a lot, you will quickly notice whether the nib suits your writing rhythm.

If your fountain pen scratches whilst writing or the ink flow is interrupted, it is usually time to clean the LAMY fountain pen nib or, if necessary, replace it with a new one.

Through daily use and different types of paper, even the hardest material wears down steadily. A new LAMY nib grade can then rekindle the joy of writing.

LAMY nib grades for calligraphy and more

In addition to standard widths, we also offer specialist nib grades. One example is the LAMY Z 50 nib (available in widths of 1.1, 1.5 or 1.9), which was developed specifically for the LAMY joy calligraphy fountain pen.

Tip: This is also available as a set including the three different nibs.

These fountain pen nibs allow you to create lines of varying thickness by adjusting the angle. This lends every word an artistic, aesthetic line quality.

Especially in this day and age, the handwritten letter is regaining its value. With a special LAMY fountain pen nib, you send a message of appreciation. Once you have experienced the elegance of a high-quality or special fountain pen nib, you will never want to be without this tactile experience again. Why not try it for yourself!

Durability through replacement parts

At LAMY, we focus on durability. Instead of throwing away an entire writing instrument when the nib is worn or damaged, we offer all LAMY nib grades for purchase individually. This is not only kind to your wallet, but also to the environment. A LAMY fountain pen can last for decades, as long as you treat it to a new LAMY nib every now and then.

Perfection lies in the detail

Choosing the right LAMY nib is a very personal decision. Whether made of stainless steel or gold, whether extra-fine or extra-wide: at LAMY, you’ll find quality ‘Made in Germany’.

FAQ

For beginners, we recommend nib size A (Beginner). This nib has a particularly rounded tip and is more robust than conventional nibs. It has been specially designed to compensate for the uneven pressure exerted when learning to write and to prevent the pen from ‘tilting’ or scratching the paper. However, an “M” nib can also be a good alternative for beginners.

The range of LAMY nibs is wide and varied to suit every writing style:

EF (Extra Fine): For very delicate, small handwriting.

F (Fine): The ideal choice for fine, clear lines.

M (Medium): The classic choice that suits almost any handwriting style.

B (Broad) & Extra Broad (BB): Perfect for distinctive signatures and those who prefer a rich ink flow.

LH (Left-handed): Specifically designed for left-handers to enable smooth writing without smudging.

In addition to standard nib sizes, LAMY offers specialised nibs for fountain pens that go beyond everyday correspondence:

Steel nibs: The robust all-rounders, available in either polished stainless steel or with a black PVD coating.

Gold nibs: Thanks to their material properties, our 14-carat gold nibs offer a particularly elastic and smooth writing experience.

Calligraphy nibs: Available in widths of 1.1 mm, 1.5 mm and 1.9 mm. Their bevelled tips create varying line widths and lend the handwriting an artistic character.
