Ink from LAMY: the expression of the highest writing culture

Writing is not merely the transmission of information. It is also an expression of personality and a moment of respite in a digital world. The essence of every handwritten word is the ink.

It is the ink that gives the nib its soul and brings thoughts to paper. At LAMY, we regard ink as an essential element of a perfect writing system.

In our range, you will find everything a writing enthusiast could wish for: from classic ink cartridges and elegant inkwells to converters and specialised cartridges for rollerball pens. Discover our range, which combines precision and aesthetics.

Why you should buy the best ink

Anyone who owns a high-quality fountain pen knows: The choice of ink has a significant impact on the writing experience. When you buy high-quality ink, you are investing in the longevity of your writing instrument. LAMY inks are precisely tailored to the feed systems of our fountain pens.

Inferior ink for fountain pens can cause the ink feed to become clogged or produce an uneven line. Additives such as colour pigments, fragrances, effect particles and others can also cause the delicate ink feed system to become blocked.

Our practical LAMY T 10 high-capacity ink cartridges for fountain pens, containing 1.25 ml, are precisely tailored to the design of our LAMY fountain pens. (Except the LAMY 2000 model).

Our commitment to quality also applies to our ink formulations. Whether in a glass bottle or as a cartridge for fountain pens: LAMY inks are characterised by optimal flow properties, colour depth and a fast drying time.

LAMY Cartridges: Practical for everyday use

LAMY ink cartridges are efficient, clean and reliable. These practical ink cartridges are indispensable, particularly for everyday school life or in a hectic business environment.

LAMY Fountain Pen Cartridges: A wide range of colours to suit every taste

A LAMY fountain pen with ink cartridges is the epitome of functionality. Our high-capacity LAMY T 10 ink cartridges offer a particularly large filling volume, so you won’t suddenly run out of ink, even when writing long texts.

The colour range covers everything your heart desires:

  • Classic Blue: Erasable and ideal for school and formal correspondence.

  • Deep Black: For striking, professional handwriting.

  • Colourful accents: From vibrant red and rich green to shades of turquoise and violet. Each colour expresses your individual personality or current mood.

If you’re looking for ink cartridges for LAMY fountain pens that fit perfectly, only the original is the best choice. This is the only way to ensure that the connection mechanism seals perfectly and prevents any ink from leaking.

The formula behind the fountain pen ink cartridge

What makes a good fountain pen ink cartridge? It is the balance between surface tension and flow rate. A LAMY ink cartridge ensures that exactly the right amount of ink is delivered to the nib – whether you are writing very quickly or practising calligraphy at a leisurely pace.

When you use LAMY fountain pen cartridges, you benefit from a high-quality formula. With LAMY ink cartridges, the outline of your handwriting remains sharp and precise. This also ensures that you can start writing quickly whenever necessary.

Ink for fountain pens: the time-honoured ritual of refilling

For many connoisseurs, the pleasure begins even before the first word is written: with the careful refilling of the fountain pen from the ink bottle. Drawing ink from a fine ink bottle for fountain pens is very easy with a suitable LAMY converter.

Alternatively, it can be done directly (without a converter) using the integrated piston mechanism of the LAMY 2000 fountain pen. A bottle of LAMY ink is also a design statement on any desk and another step towards reducing plastic waste.

The advantages of ink in an ink bottle:

  1. Reduction of plastic waste: An ink bottle generates less waste than disposable cartridges.

  2. Individuality: The range of colours is often even wider with ink from an ink bottle.

  3. The special writing experience: Filling the fountain pen with ink is a mechanical experience that turns handwriting into a ritual.

Our LAMY T 52 ink bottle features an integrated blotting paper roll and a special recess – the so-called “ink reservoir” – which allows even the very last drop of ink to be collected cleanly.

Rollerball pens with cartridges: The best of both worlds

The modern LAMY T 11 ink roller cartridges in blue combine the smooth glide of a ballpoint tip with the fluid aesthetics of real ink. The ink in these cartridges is designed to dry instantly and not smudge – ideal for left-handers or for quick notes with the rollerball pen. It is also erasable.

Tips for the best care of your nib and ink

To ensure the ink remains fluid at all times, it is advisable to look after your writing instrument regularly. Especially if you are changing the ink colour or have not used the fountain pen for a long time, the capillary system should be cleaned first:

  1. Rinse the fountain pen with lukewarm water until the water runs clear.

  2. Carefully dry the nib before inserting a new cartridge into the fountain pen.

  3. Store your ink (especially ink in glass bottles) in a cool place, protected from direct sunlight, to preserve its colour intensity for years to come.

As a rule, LAMY ink for fountain pens has a shelf life of many years. Ensure that the glass bottle is tightly sealed. If the ink has dried up inside the pen, simply soaking the front section in clear water usually helps.

Responsibility and durability at LAMY

At a time when resources are becoming increasingly precious, we at LAMY are committed to durability. Our ink cartridges are particularly large, and our refill systems (converters) allow you to transform your LAMY cartridge fountain pen into a piston-fill fountain pen.

This gives you the flexibility to choose whether you want to enjoy the convenience of LAMY cartridges when on the go or the glass ink at home.

FAQ

Ink is a liquid solution or suspension of colouring agents that has been specially developed to transfer characters, symbols or text onto a surface (usually paper).

Unlike varnishes or paints, which often adhere to the surface as a thick film, ink is absorbed into the capillaries of the paper. In a fountain pen, it acts as the medium that transforms the mechanical impulse of the nib into a visible line.

The composition of modern writing ink is a precise chemical formulation designed to prevent the fine channels in the fountain pen from clogging.

The main components of ink are:

  • Water: The solvent and base (approx. 90% or more).

  • Colourants: Either water-soluble dyes (for brilliant colours and smooth flow) or pigments.

  • Humectants: Such as glycerine or glycol, to prevent the ink from drying out immediately on the nib.

  • Surfactants: These regulate surface tension so that the ink flows evenly and does not ‘splatter’.

  • Preservatives: Prevent the formation of mould or bacteria in the ink bottle or cartridge.

  • pH adjustment: To ensure the ink does not corrode the metal nib (steel or gold).

The word ‘ink’ has its roots in the Latin term tincta, which means ‘dyed water’ or ‘dye’ (from tingere = to dye/wet). In Old High German, this developed into tincta, which eventually became tinte in Middle High German.
