Digitalisisation

With an impressive annual production of over 8 million high-quality writing instruments, Lamy has established itself not only in the German specialised trade but also internationally as a sought-after lifestyle brand. The medium-sized family business now generates over half of its turnover abroad, with a presence in over 80 countries and more than 15,600 sales outlets worldwide, including around 200 mono-brand stores.

Despite this global orientation, Lamy has remained true to its home base in Heidelberg. ‘Sustainability is the guiding principle of our actions,’ emphasises LAMY Managing Director Peter Utsch. ‘Behind this is a clear commitment to economic performance under ecologically responsible production conditions and socially just behaviour that promotes society.’

Investment in production

In order to offer sustainable and functional products with the best material and manufacturing quality, Lamy produces its products - with a few exceptions - entirely in Heidelberg. The company invests heavily in local production, particularly in technological innovation projects and the digitalisation of all production areas. The use of robotics and digital networking through production control systems create transparency and continuously increase the efficiency of production processes. State-of-the-art measuring systems guarantee the quality of the high-quality designer writing instruments from Heidelberg.

In addition to the ‘Made in Germany’ quality, it is the timeless and functional design that is the foundation of Lamy's worldwide success. The foundation stone for this was laid by the LAMY 2000 model, which revolutionised the writing instrument industry in 1966 with its clear, unmistakable design language. The design principles derived from the Bauhaus have characterised the style of all Lamy brand products to this day.

Manufacture remains important

Nevertheless, craftsmanship remains a crucial part of production at Lamy. This is where the hand and eye come into play, where experience and literal dexterity are required: in fine and detailed work such as grinding or polishing surfaces, in the assembly of sensitive and small components and in quality control. ‘There is a simple principle,’ explains Utsch. ‘Components that appeal closely and directly to our senses can only be assessed for quality by a human being.’

The best of both worlds: analogue meets digital

At the same time, Lamy is constantly reinventing itself. With annual special editions, the family-run company is constantly setting trends and providing inspiration for writing enthusiasts around the world. Digital writing instruments have also had a firm place in the Lamy range for some time now. ‘It is in keeping with Lamy's pioneering spirit to actively help shape the future of writing. Analogue and digital working methods are not contradictory, but complement each other productively.’

This is why Lamy offers a variety of digital and hybrid writing instruments, such as the LAMY safari twin pen EMR. It is a biro and stylus pen in one, making it the ideal tool for anyone who moves back and forth between the analogue and digital worlds, switching between paper and tablet. With our digital writing instruments, we are bringing handwriting into the digital world - with an unmistakable design, perfect ergonomics and the highest quality.

‘Thinking tools’ for today and tomorrow

Lamy is working with renowned technology partners to further expand its range of digital and hybrid writing instruments. ‘We are continuously working on offering and updating compatible tools for the most important operating and digital writing systems,’ reports Lamy Managing Director Peter Utsch.

Lamy is also focussing on new product concepts and innovations outside its core business. Lamy sees its products as ‘thinking tools’. By helping people to express their thoughts, develop ideas and find solutions, they contribute to better understanding and shaping the world.
