Since 1930, LAMY’s company headquarters have been located in Heidelberg - just like our production site. Around 95% of all production steps, including the manufacture of most machine components, take place in-house at LAMY. We manufacture almost all components ourselves: such as all plastic parts, including the LAMY ink cartridges.
Likewise, the large-capacity ballpoint pen refills and all nibs, whether steel or gold.

This is something we maintain with conviction. Because careful controls throughout the entire production process ensure what LAMY is known for worldwide: consistently the highest quality “Made in Germany”.

For decades, LAMY has stood for high-quality designer writing instruments with timelessly modern aesthetics and perfect functionality. On the one hand, we guarantee this by consistently using high-quality materials and processing them in-house.
On the other hand, we ensure the outstanding quality of our products through a fine-meshed control, which every single LAMY writing instrument passes through before it leaves the production line.

Quality control is carried out both by automated processes during final assembly and by the human eye: factors such as the appearance, colour, gloss level and function of each individual writing instrument are given a final check by the trained eye of qualified employees.

Even in times of increasing automation, a large proportion of the work steps at LAMY are carried out by hand. To be precise, around three quarters of the production time goes into the manufacture. Hand and eye take over where experience and intuition are required: the grinding and polishing of the nibs, for example, is done by hand, as is the inscription on the finished fountain pens or the assembly of sophisticated writing instruments such as the LAMY 2000.

As each series of writing instruments brings its own challenges in production, there are specially equipped workstations in the LAMY factory for each one of the products. There are only a few specially trained employees working at each station, but their care, precision and experience are essential for LAMY’s special quality standard.
