F, B, M – these are just a few examples of abbreviations we use to designate LAMY nibs. They describe the thickness of the nib – how wide the pen's stroke is on paper. The exceptions are nibs with the designations A and LH – these are specially designed for beginners and left-handers, adapted to their specific requirements.
The role of material when purchasing a pen
The shape and thickness of the nib are primarily decisive for the writing feel: LAMY standard nibs are made of steel and are available in a variety of thicknesses, shapes, and finishes. Gold nibs, however, are an exception—here, the material ensures the highest quality writing comfort.
Our tip: try the specially profiled LAMY Z53 nib. Members of the LAMY community find that the writing feel is very similar to that of a gold nib – this allows you to better assess in advance whether investing in a gold nib would be worthwhile for you.

Take nib thickness, for example: the smaller your handwriting, the finer the nib should be. Large handwriting, on the other hand, usually looks best with a broad nib.

In addition to the material (steel, stainless steel, gold), LAMY nibs also differ in line width and cut shape: nibs with thicknesses EF, F, B, BB are straight, nibs with thickness M have a completely rounded tip, and nibs with thicknesses OM, OB, OBB are bevelled at the tip and are particularly suitable for an inclined writing position.
