not just a pen:
Lamy celebrates “50 years of Lamy Design”

One writing instrument is the same as the next?
Lamy has spent the last 50 years demonstrating time and again what added value this small everyday object has to offer! Lamy has transformed this commonplace item into a lifestyle accessory thanks to its wide range of iconic models and annual special editions: the brand represents exceptional design, perfect functionality, individuality and the pleasures of writing by hand for writing enthusiasts around the globe. The motto in the 2016 anniversary year is “not just a pen” – and not without good reason!

The success story of the LAMY brand began precisely 50 years ago with the LAMY 2000: the model created by Gerd A. Müller established the clear and functional design which still defines the style of the LAMY brand products today – the Lamy design. Today, Lamy is not only market leader in Germany but has also developed an internationally sought-after designer brand – as reflected by its approx. 25 characteristic series and 200 models, its annual production of 7 million writing instruments, its 90 million euro turnover and its 250 Lamy points of sale worldwide.

Exhibition at the Museum of Applied Art, Frankfurt
24 September 2016 – 29 January 2017

Take a virtual walk through our exhibition “thinking tools“ at the Museum Angewandte Kunst, Frankfurt am Main. Here are some impressions of the exclusive preview event last week which was attended by guests like Dr. Manfred Lamy, artist Christoph Niemann, LAMY safari designer Wolfgang Fabian and former Braun designer Dieter Rams.

Thinking Tools: Design as Process.
On the Creation of Writing Utensils

What are the requisites for convincing design in utilitarian objects? And how does good product design come about?

From 24 September 2016 to 29 January 2017, in the exhibition “thinking tools. Design as Process: On the Creation of Writing Utensils“, the Museum Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt am Main will take a look at what goes into making our world of things.
Taking the writing instruments from Lamy as an example –
including popular classics like the LAMY 2000 and the LAMY safari – the show will provide insights into the design process as a complex interplay between the designers, company management, product developers and marketing team. To this end, it will present – for the first time – sketches, models and prototypes from the Lamy archives, vividly retracing the long path from design to product.
Illustrations by Christoph Niemann, whose works are known from such publications as the New Yorker
and ZEITmagazin , will enhance the show with humorous statements on the importance of writing utensils as tools that aid us in conceiving and forming our thoughts.
The exhibition was initiated by Lamy on the occasion of the anniversary „50 years of Lamy design“. To accompany the exhibition, the catalogue thinking tools published by Verlag av edition will appear at the end of September. It will be available in bookstores worldwide.

Event

50 years of Lamy design, 400 international guests and countless unforgettable moments: On October 1, 2016, the great anniversary "50 years of Lamy design" was celebrated at Heidelberg Castle.

A spectacular lightshow projected on the historical facade of the castle opened the event and, at the same time, marked the peak of this year's jubilee. The projection mapping built a bridge between traditional hand-writing and the digital age, thus documenting the development of Lamy into a cosmopolitan brand of global relevance.

The company set an example with the progressive performance: "Lamy is present. A brand with tradition", explains CEO and President Bernhard M. Rösner."But also, and above all, Lamy is a brand with future, more vivid and contemporary in the digital age than ever."
