The first of its kind: LAMY dialog 3

For people interested in design around the world, the writing instruments from Lamy are a synonym for modern and functional design made in Germany. But the unmistakable, avant-garde design language is not the only special factor that epitomises the Lamy brand.

Its great appeal also comes from the technical innovations that Lamy aims to achieve with each new product in order to increase writing comfort.

Without doubt, the highlights of this company ethos are the solitary writing instruments that are created in dialogue with the great product designers of our time. The LAMY dialog 1, for example, was designed by the eminent Richard Sapper as a futuristic ballpoint pen with a triangular body. The LAMY dialog 2, on the other hand, is a capless ink rollerball of minimalist style, which bears the signature of Danish architect and designer legend Knud Holscher.

The third in the series is by Switzerland’s Franco Clivio, who with the new LAMY dialog 3 has created a fountain pen that is unique in the best sense of the word.

Franco Clivio learned his craft at the Ulm School of Design, and, among his other activities, now teaches at the University IUAV of Venice. He has gained an excellent international reputation with his utility-oriented designs reduced to a few basic shapes, and through his work for clients including Gardena, ERCO, FSB and Rodenstock.

The winner of many awards, Clivio has already convincingly demonstrated his preference for brilliantly simple solutions at the highest technical level with the LAMY pico. And anyone who has had this original pocket pen in their hand will not be surprised that the new LAMY dialog 3 also takes the state of the art for writing instruments a beautiful step further.

The LAMY dialog 3 is an exquisite twist-action fountain pen with a palladium finish, whose rhodanized two-colour 14-carat gold nib retracts at the turn of a hand. A precisely closing ball valve protects the nib from dirt and drying out. As a result, the unconventional writing instrument does not need a cap, and therefore stands out with exceptional aesthetic appeal and particularly high writing comfort.

A further technical highlight is the shiny chrome clip, which is raised or retracted by the twist action – a Lamy world patent. When the nib is advanced, the clip lowers into the pen body, and therefore does not get in the way when writing. When the nib is retracted, the clip lifts out again, ready to function.

All this innovative writing technology will definitely impress those who like to write with flowing pen and ink not just at their desk but also in meetings, as well as out and about on business trips. They are invited to do so by this modern, distinctive twist-action fountain pen, which comes in an attractive case made of contrasting beech in black-brown varnish.

The LAMY dialog 3 can be purchased from September 2009 at specialist retailers and in the specialist departments of selected department stores.
